CAMDEN DANCE FESTIVAL 2007

Many groups and individuals took part in the annual festival this year at the Shaw Theatre in Euston. The show is for adult performers of all ages and is intended to promote health benefits to people by taking regular exercise.

The first act was Bena, who performed a traditional Indian dance.  She wore a beautiful blue sari.

Next to perform were the Camden Active Health team ballet group.  The group, which consisted of men and women, performed a classical piece.  The ladies dressed in floating black classical skirts finished off with a red rose.

I performed my flamenco dance next, which was called Farruca.  It is a traditional dance from Andalucia in southern Spain.  The Farruca is thought to be originally from Galicia and taken to Andalucia by the gypsies.

Members of the SIFD performed a traditional folk dance, which was well received by the audience. SIFD

The Iberian Folk dancers performed two Spanish dances.  The first was La Reja. This dance is similar to Tanguillos, which are popular in Southern Spain. This was followed by a cheerful Spanish Rumba called Perompompero.

The Camden Active Health team performed a lively tap routine called “straighten up and fly right.”

A performance of belly dance by dancers in heavy decorated costumes followed.

The Camden Active Health team and a group of young street dancers performed a tribute to James Brown, who died this year.  This consisted of three numbers made famous by James Brown.

The first half finished with New York New York.  The Camden Active Health team performed this show number in black suits, glittering bow ties and top hats.

The second half opened with an authentic Jazz number called “Ain’t misbehaving”.  The Camden Active Health team dressed in gold and silver.  With many people on stage it was a real show number.

The Proteas group performed two numbers. The first dance was a traditional dance from South Africa”. The second was called “Township Jive”.  This dance was very popular with the audience, who clapped along.

There were several urban dance groups performed by young dancers.  These all performed very well and showed the modern side to dance.

A group performed a show number from Chicago called “All that Jazz”.  All dressed in black, it was a very polished number performed by professional looking dancers.

Ana and Elsa performed a colourful Samba.  A popular dance from Brazil, which is traditional. They wore fabulous costumes with head dresses made of red feathers and boas round the shoulders.

The show finished with “A night at the Disco”.  All the dancers appeared on stage and joined in at the end.  It was a good show with lots of variety.  Look forward to next year.
